Haenam
Haenam is a coastal region surrounded by the sea on three sides, with an extensive coastline and wide tidal flats. It has traditionally been a major production area for seaweed and shellfish. Bordering Wando, Haenam has a similar aquaculture environment and has accumulated advanced aquaculture expertise over time
The region is home to both the Jeollanam-do Fisheries Seed Research Center and the National Institute of Fisheries Science, where active national R&D projects focus on the development and cultivation of new breeds. In collaboration with the government, Haenam has led various new species development projects, including the establishment of the Seaweed & Abalone New Breed Supply Center in April 2018. This initiative successfully introduced the "King Junbok" abalone, which reaches full growth in just 2 years and 6 months, compared to the standard 3-4 years for regular abalone.
With the nearby major city of Mokpo, Haenam benefits from strong synergy with various seafood processing facilities. This makes it a promising aquaculture hub, offering great potential for diverse R&D projects and industry growth.
